The nation of Israel had ignored God's pleading with her to come back to Him. Earlier, God used Assyria to invade the northern 10 tribes of Israel and used that, through the prophet Jeremiah, to warn Jerusalem that the same thing would happen to them unless they repented. The book of Lamentations shows the results of the Babylonian captivity of Jerusalem and contrasts that with the faithfulness of Jeremiah.
